A Note About These Resources

This resource guide focuses primarily on South Florida, where I live and where many members of our Haitian and Haitian-American community have built their lives. The organizations listed here primarily serve Miami-Dade, Broward, and surrounding South Florida communities, although some provide information, advocacy, referrals, or services that may be available beyond the region.

If you live elsewhere in the United States, some of the national resources included below may still be helpful, but I encourage you to seek qualified immigration legal services and Haitian community organizations in your local area as well. Also, I will continue updating this page as I find reputable resources that may help our community.

A Note From Chef Maika

First of all, this isn't my usual Just Maika Cooking post.

Normally, you come here, and I teach you how to cook, introduce you to ingredients, share recipes, or help you become more confident in your kitchen. But I am Haitian-American, and right now my heart is with our Haitian community.

Watching individuals, families, friends, and children experience fear, uncertainty, job loss, separation, and unimaginable emotional distress following the termination of Haitian TPS has been heartbreaking. I kept thinking, What can I possibly do?

I don't have a large amount of money to donate. I'm a small creator running Just Maika Cooking largely on my own while raising my family. But helping doesn't always have to begin with money.

Help With Your Time

We can share reliable information. We can volunteer our skills. We can make phone calls. We can help someone find legal assistance. We can connect a struggling family with food or community resources. We can use whatever platform we have to help someone find the people who are already doing this work.

So that is what this page is for. If you need help, I hope it makes finding trustworthy resources a little easier. And if you're wondering how you can help, I hope it reminds you that you may have more to give than you realize.

What Happened to Haitian TPS?

The U.S. government terminated Haiti's Temporary Protected Status designation effective July 27, 2026.

TPS is an immigration protection that can allow eligible nationals of designated countries experiencing extraordinary conditions to temporarily remain and work in the United States. The legal and policy situation surrounding Haitian TPS continues to develop.

Resource Disclaimer: This guide focuses primarily on resources serving Haitian and Haitian-American communities in South Florida. Some organizations listed may also provide statewide or national assistance, information, or referrals. Availability, service areas, eligibility requirements, immigration laws, court decisions, and programs can change. Always verify current information directly with the organization providing the service. This page is for general educational and community-resource purposes and is not legal advice. For advice about your individual immigration circumstances, consult a qualified immigration attorney or DOJ-accredited representative.

If You Are Affected by Haitian TPS

Please don't rely solely on information circulating on social media.

Organizations currently providing or coordinating resources for Haitian families include:

Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center

Sant La's TPS Resource Center is coordinating assistance through the Lakou TPS Initiative.

Resources may include immigration legal referrals, Know Your Rights information, food assistance, housing resources, employment support, mental health and wellness resources, family support, and financial assistance when available.

Haitian Bridge Alliance

Haitian Bridge Alliance provides humanitarian, legal, and social services for migrants and maintains resources specifically for Haitian TPS holders.

Their migrant resource center includes Haitian Creole and English materials, legal information, employer information, asylum resources, and other immigration resources.

Legal Aid Service of Broward County

For those here in Broward County, Legal Aid provides free immigration assistance to eligible residents.

Because demand is currently extremely high, their Immigration Unit has reported significant waits for consultations. Contact them as early as possible rather than waiting until an urgent situation develops.

Catholic Legal Services

Catholic Legal Services provides immigration legal services throughout South Florida, including Know Your Rights education, legal screenings, and immigration assistance.

Protect Yourself From Immigration Scams

Periods of fear and uncertainty unfortunately create opportunities for people who promise solutions they cannot legally provide.

  • Do not pay someone simply because they claim they can "guarantee" an immigration result.
  • Before making major decisions about your immigration status, seek advice from a qualified immigration attorney or DOJ-accredited representative.
  • When you're unsure where to begin, established community organizations such as Sant La can help connect you with trusted resources.

How Can I Help If I Don't Have Money?

This was the question I asked myself. Maybe you're asking it too. And I've learned money is important to nonprofit organizations, but it isn't the only resource communities need.

Give Your Time!

Community organizations need volunteers. Sometimes that means helping at an event. Sometimes it's answering phones, organizing supplies, sharing information, or helping families navigate resources. You don't have to be an attorney to be useful.

Give Your Skills

Think about what you already know how to do. Your professional skills may be something a community organization would otherwise have to pay someone to provide. Ask organizations what they actually need rather than assuming.

  • Are you a teacher?
  • Graphic designer?
  • Photographer?
  • Writer?
  • Translator?
  • Cook?
  • Accountant?
  • Social-media creator?
  • Driver?
  • Administrative professional?
  • Do you speak Haitian Creole or French?

Share Trusted Information

One share can reach someone who didn't know help existed. So, instead of reposting rumors, share information directly from established legal and Haitian community organizations. When information changes, correct old posts and point people toward the most current source.

Call Your Representatives

You don't need money to make a phone call. Legislation has been introduced in Congress concerning TPS protections for Haiti. Advocacy organizations are encouraging constituents to contact their senators and representatives to advocate for protections for Haitian families. Even a few minutes of your time can add another constituent's voice.

Help Someone Navigate the Internet

This one may sound small, but it isn't. Someone may:

  • have difficulty finding an application.
  • not understand which organization to contact.
  • need help printing a form.
  • need a trusted resource translated or explained.
  • simply not know where to begin.

Helping one person get connected with qualified assistance is still helping.

For My Fellow Creators and Small Business Owners

You don't need millions of followers to use your platform for something meaningful. You also don't have to become an expert or speak on issues you don't understand. Sometimes the most responsible use of our platforms is simply saying: "I don't have the answer, but I know where you can find people who do."

  • Share a resource.
  • Donate a service.
  • Offer your professional skills to a nonprofit.
  • Allow a community organization to use your space.
  • Put a flyer in your business.
  • Share a volunteer opportunity.
  • Amplify organizations already doing the work.

To My Haitian Community

Just Maika Cooking will continue to be a place about food, cooking, learning, and exploring cultures through the kitchen.

But food has never existed separately from community!

Our kitchens are where families gather. Recipes carry our histories. Food is how many of us care for one another when words aren't enough. So although this isn't a recipe, it belongs here. Also, I will continue updating this page with trustworthy resources as I find them.

If you know of a reputable nonprofit, legal clinic, food distribution program, mental health resource, volunteer opportunity, or other service that helps Haitian families affected by TPS changes, please contact me so I can review it for possible inclusion here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of common questions I have answered. If you have any questions, please write them in the comments below.

What happened to Haitian TPS in 2026?

Give a short factual explanation and link directly to the official USCIS update.

When did TPS for Haiti end?

State the effective date and link to USCIS. Because litigation and government guidance can change, include your "last updated" date.

What should I do if I had Haitian TPS?

This is where you should not give immigration advice. Say that a person's options depend on their individual circumstances and direct them to a qualified immigration attorney or DOJ-accredited representative.

Where can Haitian TPS holders get legal help in South Florida?

Point to Sant La, Catholic Legal Services, Legal Aid Service of Broward County, and the other vetted organizations in your resource section.

Are there free or low-cost immigration legal services for Haitian families?

Yes, but explain that eligibility, availability, and wait times vary. Direct readers to the organizations rather than promising that a particular service will be free.

How can I help Haitian families if I don't have money to donate?

This is an important one because it reinforces the unique purpose of your article: volunteer, translate, share verified information, offer professional skills, advocate, help someone navigate resources, etc.

How can I tell whether information about Haitian TPS on social media is accurate?

Encourage readers to verify claims with USCIS, official court/government information, qualified immigration attorneys, and established Haitian community legal organizations.

Where can someone get emotional or mental-health support?

Given what originally prompted you to create this page, I would include this. You can provide Haitian/community mental-health resources and explain that anyone in the U.S. experiencing a suicidal or mental-health crisis can call/text 988.
