Essential Measuring Tools I Use

When it comes to consistency in cooking, reliable measuring tools are non-negotiable. Here are the ones I actually use in my kitchen—tested through many recipes and still going strong.

A. Magnetic Measuring Cups & Spoons

I love magnetic sets because they stay together in the drawer and don’t vanish when I need them most. They nest neatly, are easy to read, and work for both dry and sticky ingredients like honey or spices. My sets from OXO and Cuisinart are sturdy, dishwasher-safe, and built to last.

The magnetic snaps make them easy to keep together without the hassle of a ring, and the durable, heavy-duty stainless steel feels sturdy in hand. These cups are well-made, easy to clean, and built to last. Definitely a smart, long-term addition to any kitchen.

B. Liquid Measuring Cups (Pyrex)

A classic for a reason. I use Pyrex glass measuring cups constantly for broth, batters, and even prepping dressings. They're microwave-safe, easy to pour from, and their clear markings make it easy to measure at a glance.

JMC Purchased
Pyrex 3 Piece Measuring Cup Set
4.5
$25.99

My Review: Pyrex is a household staple in America, and you can't go wrong with it. The Pyrex Prepware 2-Cup Glass Measuring Cup features easy-to-read double-sided measurements in both metric and customary units, and it's made of tempered glass, making it microwave-safe—perfect for melting butter. The sturdy, molded handle won’t break, and the spout allows for easy pouring. Simple, reliable, and built to last. Additionally, I recently purchased the Pyrex 4-Cup Glass Measuring Cup, which is ideal for measuring broth for soups; it also allows you to make batter right in it. I had to give it a 4.5 because recently, the red labeling was disappearing. Never had this happen before on any other I owned.

Measuring Tip: Use dry measuring cups for flour, sugar, and spices, and liquid measuring cups for anything pourable. Yes, there’s a difference—and it matters!

Mixing Tools I Use Weekly

Whether I’m whipping up a sauce, tossing a salad, or folding batter, having the right mixing tools makes prep feel a whole lot easier. These are the ones I reach for week after week.

1. Mixing Bowls (Stainless Steel and Glass)

I keep a mix of both. Stainless steel bowls are light, durable, and great for everything from marinating to tossing vegetables. Glass bowls let me see what's going on and are perfect for anything that needs to be microwaved or served straight from the bowl.

JMC Purchased
Pyrex Glass, 3-Piece, 3 PC Mixing Bowl Set
4.8
$17.99

My Review: I love the clean, classic look of this Pyrex 3-piece glass mixing bowl set. It’s a staple in my kitchen. Pyrex is known for its durability, and these bowls definitely live up to that reputation. I use them for everything from mixing batters to storing leftovers, and the fact that they’re microwave-safe makes them super multifunctional. They’re also easy to clean and stack nicely in the cabinet. The only reason this isn’t a five-star for me is because I always have that little fear of breaking them when I’m using or storing them, even though they’re made to last.

2. Silicone Spatulas

Flexible, heat-safe, and perfect for scraping every last bit from a bowl or folding ingredients gently. I prefer silicone spatulas with sturdy handles that don’t detach during use.

Hi-Temp Silicone Spatula - ThermoWorks
4.8

My Review: I've currently switched to the ThermoWorks Hi-Temp Silicone Spatula, and it's been great. The fact that it's all silicone makes it easy just to throw it in the dishwasher and ensures that it will last a long time. It is well made, and the tip is super thin, which is great for scraping; at first, I was afraid it would crack, but it has not yet. Just be careful with it around blades. I made this mistake and have a small snip on mine, but it hasn't cracked around it. So it's still holding well.

A balloon whisk is my go-to for dressings, eggs, and sauces. A flat whisk is perfect for stirring roux and preventing lumps in cream-based dishes. Both are simple, affordable tools that do a lot of heavy lifting in the kitchen.

Technically a baking tool, but I use them for everything from rolling dough to roasting vegetables. They save parchment paper, keep cleanup easy, and help prevent sticking on trays and surfaces.

My Review: This Amazon Basics Silicone Baking Mat works exactly as it should—non-stick, easy to clean, and a perfect eco-friendly swap for parchment paper or foil. I toss it in the dishwasher after use, and it saves me from scrubbing sheet pans. If you own sheet pans, this is the companion you need. I first saw bakers using these in hotel kitchens, and now I can’t imagine cooking without one!

My Review: These silicone baking mats remind me of the ones I used in commercial kitchens, called Silpat, which are durable, non-stick, and designed to last. They perform just like the professional-grade versions I used back then, staying flat in the oven, releasing food effortlessly, and saving me from wasting parchment paper. Whether I’m roasting vegetables or baking cookies, they’ve become a reliable staple in my kitchen.

Five Mixing & Measuring Tips

Getting great results isn’t just about having the right tools; it’s also about knowing how to use them. Here are a few tips I keep in mind to make prep faster and more accurate.

  1. Measure dry and liquid ingredients with the right tools. Dry measuring cups are meant to be filled to the top and leveled off, while liquid measuring cups are designed for pouring without spilling. Swapping them can throw off your recipe, especially in baking.
  2. Level your measurements. Use the flat edge of a knife or spatula to level off dry ingredients for precision, especially when measuring flour, sugar, or baking powder. A little extra can really affect texture.
  3. Use mixing bowls with high sides for messy jobs. Whether whisking vigorously or tossing a salad, high-sided bowls help contain splatter and keep things neater on your counter.
  4. Don’t underestimate the spatula. A good silicone spatula isn't just for scraping—it's perfect for folding, stirring, and even sautéing. It’s one of the most versatile tools in my kitchen.
  5. Nest your mixing bowls and measuring tools. Space-saving design isn’t just about aesthetics. When your tools are easy to store and access, you're more likely to use them often.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here, you will find a list of common questions that I have answered. If you have questions, please write them in the comment section below.

Do I really need both dry and liquid measuring cups?

Yes, dry measuring cups are meant to be filled to the brim and leveled off, while liquid cups are designed for easy pouring and accurate volume reading at eye level.

Are silicone baking mats better than parchment paper?

Silicone baking mats are reusable, non-stick, and lay flat, making them a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to parchment paper, especially for roasting and baking.

What size mixing bowls should I get?

A good set includes at least three sizes: small (1–2 qt), medium (3–4 qt), and large (5–6 qt). This gives you flexibility whether you're mixing spices or tossing a full salad.

Why use magnetic measuring spoons or cups?

Magnetic sets stay together and are easier to store and find in drawers. Plus, they typically fit inside narrow spice jars better than bulkier sets.

What’s the difference between a balloon whisk and a flat whisk?

Balloon whisks are ideal for incorporating air into batters or eggs, while flat whisks are better for stirring sauces and reaching the edges of shallow pans.
